One Journey, Many Passages | The Story Behind My Books

One Journey. Many Passages. The story behind the books. by Marie-Dominique Rail

✧ Behind the Books

"I thought I was writing separate books. Looking back, I realized I had been writing the passages of one life."

People sometimes ask how so many of my books came to be released within such a short time.

The truth is, they were never written within such a short time.

They were written through one of the most transformative seasons of my life.

For a long time, I believed I was simply writing separate books. Only later did I understand that I had been writing the passages of one life.

Each book was born during a different season. None of them was planned as part of a collection. Each emerged because a particular passage asked to be lived, understood, and eventually shared.

Looking back, I can now see what I could not see while I was living it.

Life was gently teaching me through passages.

Some were visible, cancer, intensive treatment, stem cell transplantation, grief, and recovery.

Others unfolded quietly within me, the loss of certainty, the surrender of old identities, the discovery of a quieter strength, the reconstruction of hope, and the gradual return to presence.

At the time, I could only write from where I stood.

Semper Fidelis was born as I was learning what it meant to remain faithful when life suddenly changed.

Beyond the Veil emerged while I was receiving chemotherapy and radiation, grieving the deaths of my brother and my godmother. It became an exploration of love that continues beyond physical absence.

Beyond Recovery grew through transplantation and the long, often invisible work of rebuilding. It was there that I discovered recovery is not simply about surviving. Sometimes the deepest healing begins after survival.

Journey to Wholeness followed as I slowly learned that healing is not about returning to who we once were, but gently welcoming the person life has shaped us to become.

For years, I believed these were individual books.

Today, I see something different.

I see one journey.

Not because every reader will walk the same path I did, but because every human life is shaped by passages.

Not everyone experiences cancer.

Not everyone receives a stem cell transplant.

Not everyone loses loved ones during treatment.

Yet every life encounters moments that quietly change its direction, moments of loss, uncertainty, love, healing, awakening, forgiveness, waiting, and renewal.

The circumstances may differ.

The inner passages are profoundly human.

That is what these books have become for me.

Not books about illness.

Not books about grief.

Not books about recovery.

They are companions for the invisible passages that shape our lives.

Each one was born from a different passage of my own journey and is now offered as a companion for yours.

Only afterward did The Passages begin to emerge.

It was not born from a single experience, but from looking back and recognizing the landscape those experiences had formed together.

I realized I had not been writing separate stories.

I had been learning the language of life's passages.

Today, that understanding continues to shape everything I create, my books, contemplative piano music, reflective writings, and healing presence.

The forms may differ.

The intention remains the same.

To quietly accompany those walking through life's visible and invisible passages.

One heart at a time.
